Found a soloution by mapping it in Steam Big picture mode (then exiting). If that helps anyone else.

I found that i was using it in the wrong mode. You need the top two lights to be lit.

MSI Force GC30- GC20 Controller Issues - Solution
Ok, here's the easy solution for this controller.
You take a paperclip and insert it into the pin hole on the back. Press once to change its mode and your controller should work.
It has several modes depending on Default, Analog, Digital and Android see the .pdf for detailed instructions.

Good Controller, stable but the thumbs aren't as easy on the fingers as an Xbox 360 Wireless. Easy to get use to and it seems to offer more stability without the Drifting issues.
Hope this helps

thanks for the advice, but it was a ♥♥♥♥ controller. Binned it. Don't buy a GC30 :) or MSI peripherals full stop i imagine, they half arsed it. Their Gcards as of 2016 are still solid though.

I've read through most of the easy searchable solutions out there like resetting through the hole, changing the mode and simply unplugging it.

IF NONE OF THAT WORKED, HERE'S WHAT WORKED FOR ME:

unplug and plug the dongle

you should get an error notification on windows

if you dont get an error notification thats, fine ( i hope)

open device manager

go down to universal serial bus controllers

you should be able to find which one to uninstall because it says it has an error. simply right click and uninstall the one that has a yellow exclamation point

replug the dongle and i hope it works

Thanks, although this was from 4 years ago, the controller has long since been binned, it was purchased due to a review in PCGamer, from someone who has long since been fired for taking money it was reveiled. Said controller is just junk.

it's a pretty good controller tbh, i don't see why you're bashing on it so much
