Whichever is more 'canon' is up to you to decide. You can look up the past threads for more information about this.
And I think it's canon that Crane turned into the night hunter.
Also keep in mind the coming to the surface on the Crane turning ending. Seeing a woman and child in playground, as if all is normal, is indicative of Crane coming up outside the area that has been quarantined. This could be huge, as if the infection gets outside of Harran like that, it could go global.
The question is whether its possible for ANY tunnel or series of tunnels to eventually lead outside of the area quarantined. When the quarantine started, is there any possible way to be sure, you found every tunnel when you set said quarantine. Can any tunnel, anywhere lead out?
If there is ANY tunnel that was forgotten, breach between tunnels opened up, or route eventually found, then Crane found it. also keep in mind that according to some random encounter conversations, Harran has been around since fuedal times, when it was a trade hub. Such places were often filled with crypts and underground tunnels of which we have explored none of. We have just explored parts of the modern sewer networks build above them.
If there is the slightest possibility of a person making a mistake and not accounting for a tunnel, of an incomplete tunnel not being on maps, of a more historic tunnel or passage that was never discovered or a siesmic event or simulation thereof thru explosives opening a route between 2 tunnels, then the possibility of getting outside the quarantine is there. Its just that everyone who tries to find the route, tends to die in the dark infested tunnels, long before that.
*Three ends and its thanks to this DLC that invasions exist.
