DL 1 Co-op Between GOG Version and Steam?

I have a GOG version of DY1 and my friend who I want to play with has a steam version of the game.

We tried playing coop but neither one of us could find the mp game of the other. We were trying to play the campaign together.

Did recent patch allow for crossplay between Steam and GOG versions? Any guide or thoughts around how to make this work? Not sure if we are missing something or have to enable something to make this happen.

Yes, I saw that, but the article provides no input on how to make it work and in my experience it did not work. My friend and I could not find each other and could not play together.
