Who are these hazmat guys with the assault rifles?

I just bought the game and started a new playthrough, and there are these dudes wearing hazmat suits with assault rifles and machetes all along the city. I can't find any info on them online, but I managed to kill one by luck and he dropped his assault rifle. I feel like I probably shouldn't be getting that kind of gear this early in the game, so what's their deal?

They are part of the current Rust crossover community event. Scientists I think. You can kill them and collect the scrap that they are apparently collecting to earn gold blueprints of the Rust weapons.

"Scientists" you say. They don't carry guns and machete's. No scientist that I ever killed yielded scrap. (Opps did I say that.) I guess they are testing weapons against the Undead. LoL Happy Hunting

OP is right though, getting easy assault rifles early in the game is a bit of a shortcut. Good job killing him though.

OP, it's probably a bit late now, but you can turn community event participation on and off in online options in the main menu.

Thanks, though I'm tempted to leave it on so I can farm ARs, even though I know I shouldn't.

You can sell the guns to the merchants for good money. Normally in the early base game, you might find ammo hard to come by and the gun noise will draw heat upon you night and day. Fun though.

even the machete's are strong i killed one got a AR takes only one or 2 shots for me and i can farm them good

Well Gnome026. you're either trying to get to get a rise out of me. Or you think your the pc police or even trolling for a response. So here's the rise. How many libraries, did you find in the Slums, Oldtown, or the Countryside?. Out of all three, just Oldtown has a library. Only a token few Npc males, have ever used proper diction. To even qualify to be a librarian. How many female Npc's have you seen "carrying guns, and machete's", or actually fighting back in Dyinglight?. One Jade. She's a sponsored athlete.
Myself unlike you obviously, unless you are a male librarian that is. I visited several library's. I have only meet only one male librarian, and he was at the Library of Congress , at the time, I was there. You see, there is information, hidden in the books.
I hate all the online search redirects the are just a time waste, only showing me what they want me to read, and not, what I want to read.
It was a shame, when I was on your side of the pond. That I didn't get a chance to go to the John Ryland's in Manchester. You should go.

These scientists are kinda OP lol. I mean they are damage sponges unless you headshot them. Like they are able to straight up tank goons.

Started a new game:
They took 30+ swings from a gas pipe and still didn't die. Wasn't able to kill one until I crafted the RUST SMG and head shot him.

They can also fight off zombies/infected indefinitely tanking hits. I think I screwed around for over 15 minutes. Doesn't seem like they can be grabbed?


Went on Nightmare mode and kept throwing fire crackers at them. They were owning all of the infected/normal volatile. It wasn't until the Alphas came that they died.

I think these scientists have been juicing with their own chemicals.

I regret not disabling the event. These ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ spawned right next to a random encounter, the noise of their rifles drew a bunch of those annoying running zombies, who interrupted the dialogue and killed the survivor in 1 hit before I could even take a swing. Now I'll never know what the guy was gonna say. Stupid broken events coupled with a stupid autosave system just lead to bad times.

The survivor should respawn after a day or so

I just started a play-through on PC. I finished once console couple years ago. I actually came here to ask the same thing about these dudes. They have got me killed 3 times already. last one was trying to get on the building with the parachute to get the case. They were shooting at me and attracting tons of the fast ones. Before that, I just unlocked a safe place with chain fence and gate. Went afk inside for a bit and came back and I was being shot through the fence inside the safe area. I started running but was already at 4 health. So far, every important "think your way through" points in the quest, these ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ are near where I need to go and drawing hundreds of zombies. Ran out of firecrackers fast. I just saw that I could turn this "feature" off. Thank you. Yesterday before I found this post, I was seriously thinking this can't have been one of my favorite games.
