Hmm. The Following will be a bit harder, because new types of infected will be added. But i'm sure if you're playing on normal you'll manage. So my recommandation is after you finish the main game, go to the Following.

The Following starts directly after where the main campaign finishes. You can also switch between the main campaign maps and The Following at any time via the main menu, keeping both your inventory and character progression. I wouldn't say it's too much harder and you don't need to be overpowered to deal with it.

As the others mentioned, you can/should start The Following as soon as you finish the main storyline in the base game.

You can continue to switch back and forth between the Following and the base game maps, so you don't need to try to finish any sidequests until you want to.

And your stash is shared between the two game modes. So everything you have acquired in the base game will be available to use in the Following, and anything you find in the Following you can use in the base game.

I know its answered already but my answer is to play as much of the main campaign as you feel like before you move on. the following is directly after the main story. so i reccomend minimum to beat "extraction" before going to the following for lore reasons and balance reasons.
