4 but there can be a 5th if another player invades as a zombie in the Be The Zombie mode

that's not really coop, be the zombie is versus ( 1 v 4)

we can't play the story line in co-op ?

Up to four players can play co-op together (the entire story campaign + the following, with the exception of the very last mission of each campaign).
