No. The Campaign and The Following use same character. You lose nothing.
Just follow the steps above.
The Following is best played after you finish Campaign. I'd suggest going back and finishing it. But if you don't want to that's fine, Quartermaster should be still there in Brecken's Tower.
He hasn't yet unlocked Bilal if it's the mission I'm thinking that OP is talking about.
Anyways, the method I mentioned is far faster and doesn't involve losing anything, neither there should be any issues with it.
