Where the main Interstate Highways in concrete meet not far from the various warehouses near the Train Yard, is a good place to look, although there is often no Mushroom on the Regional Map shown for it.

Basically after a few Story Missions you will be given Quests which will add some Mushroom Icons to the Main Map (that you can call up with M key or perhaps it is another key for you).

After a while, you just learn via experience where they are. Anything damp and with shadows is a good idea to try, much as in real life.

There are some down by Gazi's place. I think his mother grows them.

If you go there and take them make sure you give her one before you leave. It makes her happy.

Oh god, they're literally everywhere ~ usually in little groups of 3-4 in a given spot. Two decent spots are the train tunnel area next to Rais's compound and all around behind the warehouses on the opposite side of Rais's compound.

Go to one area and grab them, then over to the other. They respawn very quickly, so by the time you clean the 2nd area, they're back in the first. Go back and forth and you can farm a good quantity in no time 👍

Grab the Herbs you find too. They are VERY nice to have later on for making medkits.

This. The southwestern corner behind the warehouses. Go along behind the cliffs getting all the mushrooms yo usee, then turn around and go back. They'll have respawned. Also grab the Toxic Lichen from there as well. It's pretty much a zombie-free zone, which makes harvesting them at night reasonable too.

i would recommend against using them for medkits personally... i used one save to play through normal, then Hard+, then Nightmare+ and after all that playtime (skipping sidequests on hard and nightmare) i've got 300 gauze and 600 alcohol. that's enough for 600 medkits plus whatever else you use alcohol for /shrug

comparatively i have about 100 herbs and i think it's 2 or 3 herbs for 2 medkits, when you could also use herbs with underwater algae for resistance boosters (something crazy like 50-75% less damage for the booster duration) or speed/stamina boosters.

for alcohol and gauze, just loot every body you drop, and poke your head in the nearest building's kitchens and bathrooms for a quick once over, takes like 15 seconds.
