im sure the replies below me will offer some more technical detail but the multiplayer isnt bad

thats essentially 1v4
Co-op, peer to peer as user above me said, is available right after finishing Prologue part of the game which takes around one hour to finish, you cannot invite nor join other players until you finish Prologue. Co-op is available all the time after finishing Prologue, exception is final story mission which is Singleplayer only until player finishes it and reloads save.
In Co-op, depending on the Game Type (Public, Friends Only, etc) you are able to invite other players who immediately hop your game using their character from their selected save file, carrying over skill-trees, collections as well as entire inventory and able to use, also level up in your save.
You can do everything you want in Co-op, play story missions, side quests, hunt zombies, loot, same as Singleplayer.
When you are joining other players, you play by their own current point in story, as well as difficulty selected by host.
A total of 4 players can be in one Co-op session, a host and 3 other players.
Be the Zombie game mode. Be the Zombie is game mode which is played when player controlled zombie called Night Hunter decides to invade player who is playing Campaign and has Invasions enabled in Online settings, note that in order to enable invasions you must finish Prologue. Be the Zombie has two sides:
Human players: whose objective is to defend themselves and destroy 5 nests after being invaded by Night Hunter.
Night Hunter (Player controlled zombie): whose objective is to earn 10 kills on humans before humans destroy 5 nests. It doesn't matter which player is killed by Night Hunter or how many players are still standing, taking off 10 lives of humans results in immediate victory for Night Hunter, whereas having all 5 nests destroyed before achieving 10 kills results in defeat.
In case of Be the Zombie invasion, total of 5 players can be in one session. 4 Co-op players against one player controlled zombie (Night Hunter).
