Tell me about multiplayer
I pretty much only want to play games with good multiplayer, so I am wondering how it works here. Can someone break it down for me?

its p2p i believe and its integrated in one lobby where you can play solo but someone can enter your game, vice versa you can enter someone elses regardless of whether youve finished the game or not
im sure the replies below me will offer some more technical detail but the multiplayer isnt bad

Can you only ever play with one other person?

no, you can 4 people in one lobby (including you)
you CAN have 5 but thats for pvp night hunter gamemode so the 5th person will be against you and your 3 other friends
thats essentially 1v4

That actually sounds kinda fun. Is that pretty much all there is for PVP though, or is there other stuff? How lively is PVP, is it still going or is it kinda dead?

theres other modes like the bozak horde, you and 3 others team up and complete difficult challenges (altho i suggest doing that after finishing the main game) and only one of you can trump. theres custom maps that you can play with friends, they need the same map too and theres some pvp maps on the workshop, pvp is lively in the game, opening your lobby to "night hunter" at "anytime" is a guaranteed chance a hunter will join, i would suggest finishing the game first before opening up your lobby as some hunters are very skilled. if you first play the game take note you cant play with your friends until you have done the prologue missions and then you will be notified when you are able to invite

There is two multiplayer modes available in Dying Light.

Co-op, peer to peer as user above me said, is available right after finishing Prologue part of the game which takes around one hour to finish, you cannot invite nor join other players until you finish Prologue. Co-op is available all the time after finishing Prologue, exception is final story mission which is Singleplayer only until player finishes it and reloads save.

In Co-op, depending on the Game Type (Public, Friends Only, etc) you are able to invite other players who immediately hop your game using their character from their selected save file, carrying over skill-trees, collections as well as entire inventory and able to use, also level up in your save.

You can do everything you want in Co-op, play story missions, side quests, hunt zombies, loot, same as Singleplayer.

When you are joining other players, you play by their own current point in story, as well as difficulty selected by host.

A total of 4 players can be in one Co-op session, a host and 3 other players.

Be the Zombie game mode. Be the Zombie is game mode which is played when player controlled zombie called Night Hunter decides to invade player who is playing Campaign and has Invasions enabled in Online settings, note that in order to enable invasions you must finish Prologue. Be the Zombie has two sides:

Human players: whose objective is to defend themselves and destroy 5 nests after being invaded by Night Hunter.

Night Hunter (Player controlled zombie): whose objective is to earn 10 kills on humans before humans destroy 5 nests. It doesn't matter which player is killed by Night Hunter or how many players are still standing, taking off 10 lives of humans results in immediate victory for Night Hunter, whereas having all 5 nests destroyed before achieving 10 kills results in defeat.

In case of Be the Zombie invasion, total of 5 players can be in one session. 4 Co-op players against one player controlled zombie (Night Hunter).
