As for the romance thing, no. There is no way to increase your relationships with characters, and the story is linear.

Lots of slow contact with zombies. Volatiles grope you than kill you. Virals just give you love taps. Depends on your definition of love. But all three would love to kill you.

theres a sort of love interest to the main character in the game but its not a focus in the story
