For leveling up, it's best to play on Nightmare mode and deliver DROPs when you have enough to level up, you can't lose level, only experience towards it.
Yes, you can play all the way while dying every few minutes to never dying at all, it simply depends on your experience and what you're doing and generally what you're prioritizing while playing the game.
Gold-tier weapons are mainly found from best sources that are opening dockets whether from docket codes or replaying Bozak Horde (First docket earned at trial 5, second at trial 12 and third at trial 20, fastest to replay until trial 5.) as well as playing Prison Heist which offers fastest possible way of obtaining Gold-tier weapons as long as you're getting Guru reward.
Trying to get Gold-tier weapons from looting is something you don't want to focus, as you can only get fantasy Gold-tier weapons, and chances are extremely low 1/1000 on Hard mode and 1/100 on Nightmare mode.

I forget tip that im not gold-finder. Its just additional info. I jsut want exp boost, like Nm and Hell mode in others games (D2|3), cus i play 3-4 month, 3rd playthrough and just 15 legendary lvl. Why so slow exping?
If you want to level up as fast as possible then by all means Nightmare mode is the best. 10x boost in any Legend skill-tree experience, 20x at night time. 1 DROP delivered on Nightmare mode awards 120,000 Legend experience, +10% per extra Co-Op player in lobby, so 120,000 + 30% with full lobby.
Don't deliver DROPs until you have enough to pass next rank. DROPs are main source of leveling up, you can't lose rank itself, only experience towards next rank.
Today i play on NM mode ~1h and...its extremely hard for me. Probably im a f***n casual player...but more less dmg in loot wpns (on my 15legendary lvl blue wpn in Normal - 1400. NM - 1000, modified - 2k and 1.4k), tooooo FAT enemies (5-6 strikes to infected and ~10 to viral, 20 bolts in head of Demolisher
Nightmare mode is meant for higher level players, you don't need to force yourself playing there if you don't feel comfortable enough, difficulty can be changed anytime from Main Menu > Play > Campaign > Save > Advanced, don't have Bozak Horde, Prison Heist or DLC based quarantine zone tracked as quest or difficulty options won't show up.
30-50 Legend rank should be perfectly sufficient for NG+ but it depends on story % and NG+ status, if you're on NG+ the zombies will be more healthy. At 100% story where zombies are most often healthiest and most resilient, you need as much damage support from Legend skill-tree as possible, you need minimum Legend skill-tree rank 25 to be able to put 25/25 skill-points.
You can change difficulty anytime you want from Advanced settings.
Main Menu > Play > Campaign > Save > Advanced.
However, downgrading difficulty will break rewards you're currently playing for. If you are on Nightmare mode and you're going for outfit rewards, the Nightmare play through has to be from 0% either by starting save on Nightmare mode or starting NG+ on Nightmare mode, then you must keep on playing until 100% story. If you switch difficutly to Normal or Hard, rewards will break and require starting NG+ on Nightmare mode to activate it.
Finishing Nightmare mode story will unlock both Hard mode and Nightmare mode rewards, assuming it was previously not broken by joining other players or lowering difficulty before reaching 100% story.
If you are on Nightmare mode and you're going for rewards but you're feeling underpowered, go ahead and play Stuffed Turtle to quickly level up Survivor or Legend skill-tree. Then get a bow either by finishing Bozak Horde or purchasing Harran Ranger DLC, respec Legend skill-tree or add points into Bow skill in Legend skill-tree if enough points. That'll greatly help killing pretty much everything.
I can help with anything Bozak Horde related, add and then message me anytime for it.
