What is the canon ending??

Is there any confirmation as to what the canon ending to The Following is? I hate the idea of Kyle Crane becoming infected, but some say that is the canon ending. I would rather disagree with that, but it's not my call as to what is canon and what isn't. The ending where you nuke Harran doesn't make much sense, because why would you kill everyone when you were trying to save them in the beginning? It doesn't seem like something Kyle would do.

So, does anyone know what the canon ending is? And if there is no official canon ending, then tell me what you actually think it is. I personally like the nuke one better, but let's be honest, that one doesn't make much sense.

Any content generated by the official Developers is considered 'canon'. Techland generated the DLC, "The Following", so any of it's outcomes is to be considered 'canon' to the storyline.

A 'MOD' with some sort of 'differing' content would be considered 'non-canon'.
A fan-storyline would be considered 'non-canon'...

Move on please; even if you don't 'enjoy' the endings provided by the Official Developers, lol! It's 'gameMechanics' that are interesting to this gamer, hardly 'storyline' material ever is....storyline is not why folks purchase game products, imho.

Canon and non-canon is simply distinguishing what "happened" and what "didn't happen" in a story. It's not simply an issue of who made it. Plenty of games (like KOTOR) have several endings, only one of which is canon.

If the devs haven't said which ending is canon yet, then we'll most likely find out in DL2.

Both are canon, in either scenario hes presumably dead or a future baddie in DL universe. but until the people who publish the game add continuity to his story, its at the point its at currently.

if you finished the game by nuking the town, canon.

if you finished the game as volakyle, canon.

i think if youre then not denying what happens, then you dont know the actual definition of "canon" is and youre using the erroneous colloquial definition of canon. in Clone Wars for example, people wondered if the story written was canon, based upon it being an entirely new creative team. but this game DLC is made by the same people who made dying light original game. So there is no question what is or isnt canon, both endings are canon, the question really is what will the future universe be built upon?

both endings are technically canon, but basically what youre trying to understand is what will the future universe be built upon? and what is the technical aspect to prove this?

by definition in writing, canon is the collection of works considered representative of a period or genre. --- (in the DLC, since there are multiple endings, the works are representative of multiple in timelines futures IMO.)

back to your question, the future will not be dependent on whether either ending is canon or not, because theyre in fact both canon, the future will simply depend upon what the game developers and writers want the future to be about, and this could change based on THERE WHIMS at any moment. until more story is given to us about that occurance, making something untrue, we can interpret both endings as canon.

as a result they could easily do a multiverse at this point, perhaps in a comic book series, just to see what the other endings future may be like.

the future story cannot invalidate the "canon-ness" of previous ORIGINAL WRITING, thats representative of a period of experience in a game. the writers can in the future wish to explain aspects of past multiple choice events, but until then we have to go with these basic rules of logic.

in some sense, you could look at the idea like the new star wars writers could somehow make darth vader not luke skywalkers father. nobody in there right minds would respect that in our media culture, so even though writers could technically do that, no one would really respect it, at leasts with that genre, and i thinky Dying Light community feels similarly to this story, going back and doing revisionist story writing would feel insulting to many.

really you have an okay question overall, but asking whether a multiple choice ending is canon, if it wasnt denial, then its simply understand what canon means in these kinda writing situations, which really only happen in games too.

consider there is some likelyhood that in DL2 we may be able to choose what fate we gave kyle in that DLC and it may somehow affect the universe differently according to our decisions, it seems much of the future DL2 will be dependent on our decisions. AFAIK the Game is its own source material as well.

My own tangent below:

online sometimes people will compare the canon of a manga to a cartoon, and say the story of the cartoon doesnt follow the canon, but in this case, i believe the appropriate terminology is doesnt follow source material. source material/canon i think need to better understood when it comes to teams of writers, and when they change, and when something becomes noncanonical isnt only because of fundamental shifts in who is writing/producing the story, and also not only because a possibility/choice/decision (specifically in games) is shied away from in future development.

canon terminology to me only comes into play when we compare fan-fiction to something professionally developed, and this is somewhat ludacris. IMO when a team produces an anime that departs from source material or a team creates an alternate comic/manga professionally, based upon something that is already canon, it simply creates an alternate universe of the same media, in by which this new story is also its own Canon. whereby the term noncanonical only becomes useful by applying comparisons to the various universes stories, or by speaking only about fan-fiction or theories. just my thoughts on this ongoing "what is or isnt canon in all media debate."

Canon is whatever the owners of the IP decide is canon.

Devs and directors make non-canon endings to movies or games, or even entire entries into a franchise, not intended to be canon.

A great example of this are the FEAR DLCs. Fantastic story expansions that have an impact on the end of the original, but they are non-canon.

In the end it doesnt matter. Either one of them is canon, or neither is canon. They cannot both be canon. Only one is possible. They ate mutually exclusive. You don't just get to decide what you want for yourself. That's called a head canon.

Of both are canon, and kyle is alive and the nuke went off, then really neither of them is canon. This would mean they wrote a new combined ending.

Like Deus Ex. It had 3 mutually exclusive endings. The sequel had all 3 as canon, and rewrote them to work together.

Fallout have different endings, different possible destiny for cities and characters, but only a certain set of them is canon, and Fallout 2 is based on that one specific set of all possible game endings.

heh maybe too late to adding to discussion but retrospectively after DL2 intro when you starting the game neither of them seems like endings bcs It is saying that GRE found a cure but then experimented secretly and screwed over. But since the fact Spike is in the game and If crane would nuke Harran then Spike would be dead too so in my opinion either the Volatile Kyle is true ending or The following is just a DLC without true ending :D
