Edit:
To be more precise: You'll get alcohol and metal parts in ridiculous amounts while running low on items such as household supplies, plastic, string (which should've been named "cloth" instead). The devs didn't ever bother to fix this because they do their own thing and don't try to refine their game.
Logically plastic should be found in huge amounts in the trash, string (aka cloth) in the many bags found in public places and busses, household supplies in any flat regularly. It's just not the case. Item color indicators neither indicate sell value nor rarity correctly in many cases.
After "First Assignment: Get onto the building's roof and contact the GRE" and before "First Assignment: Arm more car traps", use Quit/Load cycling to farm firecrackers. Progress Spike's dialogue near cars to receive firecrackers.
Second reason is farming supplies at Quarter Masters (Normal and Nightmare):
Sleep cycle twice, then check for random stock of most crafting supplies (discounting Electronics, Power Cables, and special items). This works best while Spike is available as a quarter master, near the doctor's trailer, since the bed is adjacent to Spike; alternatively, both QM's may have household supplies during each farming run.
add- forgot to mention:
QM's also have String.
Vendors have items also, such as Plastic, Power Cables, etc.
Oooo, thanks, I'm going to have to check this out (haven't done many of the quarantine zones yet).
The dev should make crafting actually meaningful and not the ♥♥♥♥ they did in this game. IMO
