As of leveling survivor, the best way of leveling your survivor rank would rather be delivering disaster froms from quarantine zones or air drops to quartermaster.
Bows/crossbows are really good against human enemies as Ironman said.

Other trick is if you can grab them before they attack and push them away, use any take down if they get turned around and then...use your imagination.
Also if you climb the upside of a car or garbage bin, fences, any short propertie will do. And when they start to stare at you in front of it, just make you sure you get near as possible and smash their heads. No need to waste your breath with massive and senseless sword fight over nothing.
Vault drop attack is also useful, fire arms and aiming at the head is also useful.
