as long as you backup the files you are changing you should be fine

Thanks for your reply, but what about bans? Are there any categories of mods I should avoid?
I have read multiple topics about this and I'm a bit confused about it.

From what I've seen you should *mostly* be safe. If you're going to mod, make sure that it's either set to Singleplayer or "Play with Friends" (you can play with you friends if they have the same mods as you) as the game detects what edits you made and put into your Data3 folder and will *usually* only allow others that have the same configuration of mods join/play with you.

If your going to use " cheat " mods just for fun in your own game, enjoy ~ otherwise avoid using them at all.

No problem Kascade, coming from a Bethesda game modding background, modding games come naturally to me, so I'm positively biased towards being Pro-modding when it comes to these sort of things. But yeah, I only say that because so many of the other great games I play have such a toxic anti-modding group (community?) and I want to keep people as informed as much as possible regarding modding.

Disable VAC from online settings, set your game to Singleplayer. Now do whatever you want with your game, you'll never get banned.

People don't even get banned using cheats in VAC secured games, VAC is just broken in this game.

Modding can mess things up. I have a few games that ive had to restart and even reinstall because mods corrupted games files.

If you want to be tactful with your precationary measures, I fully suggest backing up your Data3.pak (You can make a copy of it and then rename it Data3Backup.pak) before you edit any files so that way you can revert to the original if desired or neccesary. Have fun and happy modding! :)

Modding is super dangerous.... my friend, like me, believed that modding was the easy way out, so it was out of the question. But he succumbed to his temptations and tried one out. He installed one and immediately became unresponsive, yet he played alone for 10 hours straight. The next day I tried to call him but he wouldn’t answer, so I went over to his house. Turns out he was dead. Don't do it bro.

Will I be able to play co-op with my mate without risking a ban? Or is it best if I play in a single-player game?

What exact reason do you have to use mods when co-oping? I played it with a friend all the way through and had a blast without mods :P

Yes, just make sure that VAC Secure Game option in Settings > Online is disabled, I never modded so I'm not 100% sure about this but game should automatically disable VAC already when it detects mods, however you just do it beforehand just to be safe. You can only play with those who use same mods as you. If VAC is off, the chance to get banned is 0%.
