Go to your Steam Library, find Dying Light, right click on it (RMB), select Properties, then Local Files and then Verify Integrity of Game Files.

If you're able to join others but not your friend, then it's your friend's issue and not yours, it looks like he/she has modified game files. Your friend needs to have fresh, clean game files in order to play Co-Op with you, or you need to have same files as your friend in order to play with him/her.

The game is alive, there's thousands of people still playing daily, however matchmaking is a bit complicated due to NAT settings and how it works generally. In short, there might be several dozens of online matches available to join / invade, but only few to several visible to you.

There are certain factors that affect matchmaking and determine your visibility of joinable matches, for example difficulty, story progression, NAT settings (Usually Moderate, but can vary depending on routers), ping, region and VAC setting.

The most common way of searching matches would be, changing difficulty and toggling VAC Secure Game setting, mostly this'll allow you to see at least few matches.

However, it's always a good idea to create topic about looking for players. Also consider joining the Dying Light Discord[discord.gg], more chances of finding people.
