Now that I know the difference between kits, I'm currently mapping out a hand-full of yellow ambulances in The Following. Already got a dozen kits in a very short time.
I think Stan is right, the game seems to prioritize the Military Medkits when healing. This may explain why I never have any stocked up. I've had to drop them on the ground to preserve the supply.

If Quit/Load cycling to farm faster, be aware:
If in post game (after finale at dam), the game's save system changes. Quitting to create a save after opening an ambulance, will load at that same state, so the ambulance is already looted :/ Quit/Load cycling would function better before the finale, while Crane is still reset to checkpoints.
Gauze + Alcohol + underwater Algae perhaps.
I learned something new, made myself a nice little farming guide, and have had a lot of fun.
