Rais' men surrendering
So I was wondering how it works. I had been in many situations where I had a firearm in which Rais' men did not. I pointed my gun at them, and they put their hands in the air, but as soon as I try to open it, they attack. It's also pointless to point a gun at them when the box is locked, since I have to pick the lock to open it (and they attack when you try to open it).

So my question is: what exactly is the point of making them surrender?

Its just a little attention to detail. Its really only good for readying yourself to get some quick headshots.

They surrender probably to avoid gunfire noise.

Only uses I've found are either backing away from them if you don't want a fight (mostly useless) or getting into a good position to set up some headshots (a little useful). Intuitively you'd think you can hold them at gunpoint and rob the drop, but it seems its not meant to be.

Ah, that is unfortunate. I usually just get into position to headshot them.

It's really good for co-op. One guy holds them up, one guy gets the drop. It makes sense that logically, you can't hold up three dudes whilst unlocking and opening a crate.

Oh, right, co-op. I forgot about that. Makes more sense now huh.

Much like the opening.
I have managed to take the airdrop plenty of times by holding them up.
You have to do it just right. AIM the weapon at them, don't just point it.
Keep the weapon up and sighted towards them until you get up to the crate, and make sure you don't pass close by them.
Once you get to the crate open it quick, point the weapon again to make sure you still have their full surrender, and then quickly grab the goodies.
Then back away still aiming the weapon at them.

The key I seem to see is aiming the weapon at them rather than just point it towards them. It works for me.
Doesn't work every time of course, most of the time one of them will get brave at some point and charge at you. But every now and then it works.
Always worth a try.

This can only work on unlocked chests or backpacks. Relief package drops are medium-locked. There might be of use in The Following as there are random encounters where after defeating bandits you can loot their bag, which often contains weapon mods. Then again, you can just kill them outright and be dont bother with holding them up at gun or crossbow point.
Ah never thought of that but now that you mention it, I have only done this one the orange crates.
