How best to proceed when destroying volatile nests?
I gave up "down the rabbit hole" quest after destroying two hives as morning had arrived and there were too many of them around. I suspect I was wrong to use a flare then chase ofter them.
Should I have rather used the flares to make a safe path to the next hive leaving those that ran away? As there was one more hive to destroy and if I go back at night will the destroyed hives have respawned meaning I will have to start again from the beginning?

All you need Camouflage talent and crossbow. If you do not have it for some reason, bow would do. Optional skills for optimal performance: Survivor rank 25 to have Camouflage last longer.

Enter during day, easy to get there. If you can, kill zombie nearby entrance to have Camouflage on from the very moment you enter a nest. If you do not have a chance to kill zombie nearby and apply Camouflage, just enter carefully and look for normal zombie to kill and apply Camouflage from. Once you do that, just move around nest, kill zombies or volatiles with a single headshot and re-apply Camouflage. You can get Camouflage from those nested volatiles that you must destroy too, just do not wait to long to lose your buff. Volatiles will get aggravated if you kill one of them but they can't see you through Camouflage. Just kill one, loot bolt/arrow and use its body to reapply Camo.

I think we've been through this before boeriemore. Baron01's strategy is the standard ( I would go at night, there's far fewer and it can be done much more quickly ). With exception to Evolved Volitiles, you will go completely undetected using Camo. You'll own the place.

You just need a calm, focused approach to doing the hives. It can be wonderfully scary, but it's essentially quite simple if you keep your head, focus and stay camouflaged. There's always a few around for reapplying it.

I do not use the crossbow or bow. Guns will have to suffice here despite the noise.
For some reason I had always believed that volatiles saw through camo.
I shall try again and will use camo this time.

Update: I went back there at mid day. Killed a few volatiles and died a few times.
I found that once you kill a volatile your camo becomes useless if other volatiles
are present. Also, tapping interact / escape key quickly moves the orange progress line quickly right around the displayed key on the screen YET this still does not free me.
Eventually it was 9 pm and once again I went in. Now the difference was that there were
many virals and zombies around that were not there during the day.
Finally the quest was shown as completed and I was able to leave, relief an understatement.

Here's the thing about using Camo...when you use a firearm, the Camo is instantly cancelled at the first shot, making it useless, unlike with bows and melee weapons. If you're going to insist on using guns, your just making the job 10x harder. The choice is simple, but ultimately yours.

LOL. Now you tell me. I found out the hard way. Camo also did not work If I killed a volatile when others were present.
Guns were helpfull when facing a volatile across a void. Two shots from my ranger and they died.
Close combat was a problem.

What i do is jump to the nest asap, then throw a flare at the ground, hit said nest with my best sharp weapon (pref. 1 handed) and keep the flares going, then the nest is dead... hurray!

Also... Evolved volitiles ( they look a bit different ) are not fooled by camo
Baron01 Jul 15, 2017 @ 11:03am
There should not be any evolved volatile in nest, just standard ones. CAMO + bow/crossbow will easily kill them in single headshot. Others will run to place where one died but they won't see you through you CAMO. I found this method best after trying to get to nests at night.

I remember destroying only two nests but on going back (after dying) to the top of the rock face the same two nests showed up in a red haze but I never found another. The quest completed after I had moved around killing all others.

I am at the service station safe zone. I tried the bounty "takedowns at night"
I kill a zombie, use the camo, do a few takedowns, get jumped by a volarile and as the escape key rarely frees me I die, every tiime.
I was using a melee weapon so by all accounts it should not have seen through the camo but they do.
I still have the final side quest to do, Heart of Darkness, and that promises to be another headache.

Sorry to hear of your premises my friend. Keep in mind, unlike the initial DL, in TF, the " Evolved Volitiles " roam just as freely as the regular ones. Especially later into the game.

Try to approach nights and hives as though every one of them out there is an Evolved ( paranoia really sharpens the senses ).

Using the mini map detection and Survival Sense, you might try introducing more stealth and patience. Hide - They cannot see you through solid objects and they're always moving. Sit still a few, and when it's clear, move on carefully.

Once again I'd like to point out how well the Night Vision potion works along with this tactic. 👍

Firstly, this was a normal volatile and not an evolved one so my camo should by all accounts
have protected me. Thanks for the advice though.

I can not come up with a reason normal Volatile would see you through camo unless you attacked it or bumped it, in which case they will aggro you and be able to "see" you even if your come does not wear off.
