My Volatiles nightmare.
"Down the rabbit hole" I spent 16 game hours in that cave killing volatiles, dying countless times. They say destroying volatile hives are easier at nighjt. Problem is in game time the night lasts only about 20 minutes. I killed about 20 using UV light and about 20 flares and a 2900 dmg blade but they simply kept on coming. Eventually I gave up and left my respawn hunting tower.
This has been the most frustrating experience in the game for me.

You should find and kill the ones that are stuck in the ground or something!

I guess there are 4 of them.

Invite me and I'll help.

Have you tried using bow/crossbow? camouflage is useful too. Grappling hook is necessary as well.

I now destroy volatile nests only during day. The reason is that I have yet to run into evolved volatile in a nest but you can commonly run into them outside. Camouflage and crossbow makes clearing volatiles a joke, especially if you are already Survivor rank 25, which prolongs its effect to a period where you should have no issue to bring camouflage buff from outside into even the most complex nests.

It really is MUCH easier inside the Hives at night as there should be no Volatiles in the Hive itself, other than the stationary ones melded into the gorund which you have to kill to "un-Hive" the place permenantly.

The Virals become a lot easier to take out with liberal use of the camoflauge / neck break combo. Just be sure to overdo the camoflauge application. DO NOT let that blood wear off of you or you will be swarmed and there's no where to run in most Hives.

If getting to the Hives at night is your main problem (which is totally understandable, I can get to some of them after dozens of hours of experimenting and leveling up like 30+ Legendary points into melee and asrchery) but many are so out of the way and far from safe zones it's ridiculous to even try imho) You can simply head very near to a Hive during the day and putter around killing random stuff for a while as you wait for nightfall. Get in really close as it nears 20:30 or so and you should be clear of the sudden appearance of Volatiles all over the landscape and can slip in without any seeing you.

Once you start being able to craft weapons of 3000+ damage you can finally get some revenge on the Volatiles and sneak up on them in camoflauge, striking them down with a long button hold strong melee swing and at worst a couple quick follow up strikes as you circle around them before they can hit back.

I thought that camo does not work on these volatiles. I destroyed two of the four hives but when night was suddenly over there were just too many of them to survive. I died once when I fell off a ledge, once when a toad quickly depleted my health and I could not even see where it was, I died twice when grabbed by a volatile and tapping the escape key frantically did not save me.
I even died when I left the tower near the cave at 9pm. I quickly learnt to throw flares ahead of me as I ran. Thanks for the help offer, but I should have been able to complete this quest on my own, others do. I read that one has only eight minutes to destroy all the hives before morning. I spent time at the bottom of the cliff face and now realize that all the hives are high up, this using up valuable time.

I spent an hour at a near by hunting tower waiting for 9pm so getting there was not a problem.

Evolved volatiles will see through camo, but normal volatiles won't be able to.

Let BladeMaster do a walkthrough with you. Or I'll be happy to join you ( about 12:00 am EST ). Once you get a clear feel for how it's safely done, you'll be much more comfortable with the process.

Again, add me if you'd like, happy to help.

FYI night only lasts about 7 minutes.. not sure if that changes with missions..

Heres an easy way to deal with hives, bring flares, throw said flares, kill the nestling, rinse and repeat and soon enough youll have an hive free land of zombie dreams, OR if you're just too bored, get a bunch of DIY grenades and go to town on everything in the blast zone radius.

Those that pounce on you with "fangs" sticking out on each side of their mouth, hideous looking,
do they see through camo? If not, then this quest should be easy.

This is the normal volatile that can't see through camo.[i.imgur.com]

This is evolved volatile that will see through camo.[i.imgur.com]

Very informative. So I have been dying at the hands of normal volatiles. I will go back to the cave and use camo. That should work with all hostiles in that cave.
If I go back another night I wonder if all hives will have respawned.

i dont know if the health stats are different on pc or something since i play on ps4 but you can get an engraved semi shotgun which does 2550 and is semi automatic unlike that garbage golden double barrel shotgun and it makes it really easy to clear out nests even at day for me but you probably cant get it at shops until your lvl 25 i think, but it even clears out alpha volatiles (the ones with spiky af back and inky body) prettty easily
