I really wonder why the devs haven't implemented it in the first place.
The animations are fine and it seems it isn't that bad to control and aim in 3rd person either.
But as of this video you need to access the dev tools, to switch. Sadly...
The animations are okay, but they're not done to the same level as the first person animations. Handling situations with multiple zombies would be easier in third person, and seeing around corners and such would be possible, things that the devs wanted to make more challenging by sticking with First Person. There are also reports from people hacking that perspective that the kicks and dropkicks are messed up and don't work.
It would also draw too many comparisons to Assassin's Creed or Dead Rising by being in third person as well. It helps the game to stand out by having a really well done first person parkour system, which is a challenging thing to pull off as well as they did.
Just a stylistic choice that the devs went with and it pays off.
Yeah, it was a much better decision to go with since Freerunning is a huge part of the game. If they did third person they'd have to compete with AC which has a good freerunning system and a lot of other great content, but if they go first person they only really have to compete with Mirror's Edge, which arguably didn't get the freerunning down as well as it could've, and was a one dimensional game with only the freerunning as its focus, while Dying Light has much more to it.
