Creativity requires trying various methods which would be fine if one could load a previous save.
But trying a method that results in you dying means too many survival points lost.
So he does not shoot at you when up the pole?
Update: Just got the grappling hook. Could this possibly be used to get to him?
Are you suggesting that dying does not have a negative effect on the player?
I was lucky. He was busy with zombies when I used my newly acquired grapple hook to get onto the roof. Two shots from my double barrel shotgun did the job. I was disapointed with his military rifle though. Only 100 damage. If that is per shot then thats fine. Still to try it out.
No, he's suggesting that the loss of Survival Points you suffer on death is neglible at worst. I reccommend getting a bow and shooting him from the hill behind the shop the man's set up his fort in.

How about throwing a firecracker to get him busy shooting zombies. Then approach by using various things that block line of sight, then get to him whatever way you have found works.
If you have a Pistol, you should be fine.
You can Throw a Melee Weapon at him. You can use Throwing Stars ... Grenades ... Molotovs ... you can jump or fall on top of him provided you can get a height advantage. He might even react to a firecracker himself, provided you are not in his visual line of sight at the time as well.
One thing is certain, if you just head forward into the wheelhouse of his firearm, you deserve what you get. I'd change up some directions or work my way behind cover.
He is also going to have to reload, just like you would, that may give you a second or two to begin your key assault.
I'm afraid I'm with Stanley on this. Well, either you have not used enough imagination yet, or you simply are getting yourself into much more difficulty than you should for the equipment or set of character skills you currently have. Suggests you've been playing co-op, with others doing most of the heavy lifting, and you benefited from lots of the XP, but you have not yet developed a good idea of how you kill things on your own.
If it isn't that, I would say that knowledge of the map, and how to get up cliffs and plateaus, most of which have places to get there -- will help many times. You can also climb polls, just use the correct key (for me it is Space Bar) then move up and down on it (it should be the same key you use to go up and down ladders). You can then leap from it to the side once your arm is extended in that direction. Experiment until you get it down.
On the survivor points, you also cannot lose any level you have. So if you just got to level 16, let's say -- no matter how many times you die, you'll always have at least level 16. So what some people do, is they don't hand in those DROPs for XP to the Quartermaster, until they are sure they will go up another level. I don't like to do that much myself, but I'm not playing on Nightmare either.
So yes XP loss from death can hurt, especially more on Hard Mode and then Nightmare Mode, those are big hits. But there are tricks to minimize that hit, if you manage when you hand in the Drops so that you can't lose much XP. I think mostly that is slightly overkill, such management. But I would guess that on Nightmare, I'd do it in the higher levels as well.
