Save file wiped every time i die?

So I've been trying to play FF3 for the past day and every time I die and make some progress the game starts me over at new game and I have to do EVERYTHING over again. Is this a bug?? I like the game but this is really annoying me :(

Your game progress is automatically saved as a temporary save after battle ends or level of like a dungeon switches. However, this auto save data is lost when you defeat. Therefore, you have to save manually on the menu as needed. By the way, it's only allowed on the field map to save manually.

FF3 wipes your auto save when you die?!?!? Does FF4 "3D" do the same?
(never noticed.. now that i think about it never died when playing on PC)

I'd advise everyone to not rely on quick saves at all. The fact it is deleted when you die is so stupid, because that is the perfect instance that a player would want to do a quick load to try again.

I found that if you are about to die in a boss battle or want to redo a battle, you can quit and select "continue" and you'll load up shortly before the boss. Great way to prevent losing all your dungeon progress if you were under leveled. Teleport out of the dungeon and do a manual save.
