Hardware OpenAL?
The installer script installs (a outdated one at that) OpenAL, and then I see nothing in the sound for configuring which OpenAL renderer I want to use. The game's log states it's using Generic Software and I do not want it to be Generic Software due to a plethora of annoying issues I have with that.

Can I make the game use my X-fi card directly like every other OpenAL game let's me? (Minecraft, UT2004, Frozen Synapse ,etc...)

I came in here looking for this myself. I had the sound running but had to remove OpenAL because it wouldn't allow another game to run since I don't own a Creative Labs card.

Ah, now I remember the game - Bioshock crashes with OpenAL installed.

OpenAL is such a mess :\
You should be able to put this dll http://www.hammerwatch.com/OpenAL32.dll in to the game folder and then uninstall OpenAL. That way it will use a software implementation of OpenAL.
Except I don't want to use a software OpenAL, I got a X-Fi card for a reason I want to bypass windows 7's audio pathway because of the problems it brung compared to the old KMixer.

Does it really matter, the game isnt exactly a 7.1 surround sound boom tastic AAA built title.

As myran said if you just have the dll in the hammerwatch folder only hammerwatch will use it and it wont be actually installed if openAL gives you issues with other games.
It matters to me because whenever anything tries to use Windows Audio API I get ridiculous CPU usage as time goes on and improperly filtered audio that sounds bad on my headphones. If I could make this game use ASIO then I'd be just as happy... I just absolutely don't want to use the new audio stack in Windows 7 because of all the problems I run up against with it. If I was still on Windows XP I wouldn't have started this discussion.

The game's audio actually works alot better under Linux for me than Windows... so there's always that.

Oh and the CPU usage with Windows 7 audio? I even resort to the MICROSOFT DRIVERS and it still happens overtime...

Odd, I have no issues with CPU overloading on Win 7 myself but I did a search and found other people get the problem, some people were saying it was certain versions of windows 7 but they though it was fixed in an update.

I know my hammerwatch is using the OpenAL.dll in my windows folder, im on 64bit professional if your wondering, Ive got a 4 year old cheapish sound card in it.
Hammerwatch is using the OpenAL I have installed in system32 but the log states it's using Generic Software. There's no way I can set in-game to use "Default" which would let it use my x-fi card rather than try to do everything in software.
