For what you know, they could be kg, pound, coconuts, or whatever
Didn't see the scales.
Besides being american is no reason to "not understand KG"
It is a unit of measurement like pounds, all it is is a different size, and any country can use any unit. I'd be surprised if any scales you own didn't include a metric measure as well (electric will have a button somewhere to switch, mechanical will have a second scale)
If anything requires accuracy so a number of decimal places, even the US will use metric measure. I know this as I (a Brit) work with Americans daily, and the measurements we exchange and calculate in are in metres.
I suggest learning at least conversion between U.S. imperial and Metric
