Should I start playing this now?
I've played Diablo 1-3, Torchlight 1 & 2 and various other ARPGs like Sacred and Van Helsing but I never got into POE for some reason. I've heard it's very good but people also say the game is extremely complicated now and POE2 is coming out soon. Would I be an idiot to start playing it now? Should I just wait for the sequel?

Gotta start somewhere and might as well be now. There is no bad time to start. The consensus in the ARPG/gaming community is that PoE is the best ARPG since Diablo 2. Just follow guides and you will find this game is more addictive than crack, gambling, vag, and anything else that's addictive. yes the game can be/is complicated but guides and 3rd party programs can make the game easy to follow. PoE 2 will feel really different than PoE 1 and they've said PoE 1 will still be get updates as if they are treating it as their main game too along with PoE 2

So he said POE is worse than drugs.

Seeing how POE messed players' brain when they were forced to grind for 1000+ hours and only get some trashes as a reward.

Better uninstall the game before your brain is lost too.

You aren't going to be "an idiot" to start playing now, I think there's a lot of fun to be had, and path of exile 2 will not diminish the fun to be had in this game.

Sounds like some kids wanna flex their winning in a video game.

Yes, great time to start to be honest.

The game is amazing. I would suggest starting in league since you have nothing to lose by doing so (and this league is great at getting currency etc). When this league ends in 3 months or so, all your characters will be transfered to standard (along with all equipment you have bought etc).

Standard has a TON of equipment available because well it's been around forever, even stuff that is not available anymore can be bought there (like the gems that give freezing pulse extra projectiles etc).

Anyway switching to standard will let you keep playing and improving characters till you get through the end game content. I'd skip the next league to focus on that if I was just starting (although if you have alot of time to play it might be worth it to start from scratch next league for whatever bonuses it gives.

Meanwhile the game itself is kinda like a combination of 5 or 6 other similar type games, at least in length (for just 1 character), then you have the insane amount of different builds you can play. Heck there over 20 different "classes" to play as, and a HUGE passive tree that lets you specialize them all in different ways. There are more builds than you can shake a stick at, and even after over a decade, I still have something new to play every time I come back.

It is not super addicitve though at least in my opinion, it's a great game to just play a bit and then take a break if you want, but at the same time if you have a weekend with nothing to do, you can play it 24/7 and still have fun. MMO's are...usually...more addictive and hard to stop playing. PoE I can literally play throughout a day while doing other things (laundry, cooking, reading a book, watching a show or 2 etc) even leaving the game running between doing those things (or sometimes playing WHILE doing those things.....PoE is a GREAT game to play while watching a show etc as many builds can be played fairly well just using the mouse and half paying attention lol).

Finally, and almost a bit sadly....I have been paying attention to PoE 2, and man have they been working on upgrading it from PoE. It may eventually make most people focus on that, but......even though early access is coming out in 3 weeks, the full game isn't coming out for quite awhile, more than enough time to sink your teeth into the greatness that is the original PoE.

This is a game they created and provided to the public for FREE. Totally and completely free. Way back in 2012 you could just log in and play and many have for thousands and thousands of hours, without spending a dime. I got an early access pack way back and spent money for stash tabs over the years, but I only did it to support this great game.

This is the model I wish everyone would use.

So in summary, yes, try this game, love this game, and do it soon. I don't know what the future holds but.....I have played this game, the original PoE to death. I still come back every so often (like now) for a new league and create a new character, but.....I have done everything in the game so many times at this point it's ONLY for the new character build and perhaps league special content that I play. A new version, with all new content? I think I will be focusing on PoE 2 mostly in the future, and I wouldn't be surprised if alot of other long term players do the same.

The reason this matters is that more people playing = more trading and just over all fun, so if.....say 80% of the current PoE player base switches over to PoE 2 in 6 months or so, it won't kill PoE but it'll definately make a huge difference (and that is even saying that GGG continues to spend as much time and energy on PoE as they have in the past).

I love PoE, I have played it more than almost any other game (dungeons and dragons online and a MUD I used to play called 3 kingdoms being the exceptions). It even surpassed D2 (which I used to play a ton) eons ago. It is SO worth playing and enjoying and honestly this isn't your last chance to do so, it's not going anywhere, at least in the near future, but....it may be your last PEAK chance when the most other people are playing and new content is being added still etc.

Give it a shot, you have nothing to lose, it's free, it doesn't take long to download and contrary to what you have heard it's not complicated at all to jump into.

It's complicated to build a end game character that dominates everything and can do all end game content, but you don't (and honestly shouldn't) do that your first time. If I could suggest anything it is NOT to use other peoples builds (which I basically never did btw), but enjoy exploring the game, abilities, passive tree etc yourself. Look up info about abilities/nodes etc, but make your own characters, it's way more fun, and most importantly it'll give you another avenue to improve as you play, building on your experience and not just cloning someone elses accomplishments.

Making builds is .....well for me......a HUGE amount of the fun, especially long term. If you wanted to play a pre-made build and just follow directions, you could play Diablo 3 or 4, that is basically what that is.

PoE gives you CHOICES, huge amount of character customization, tons of different skills and abilities that you can boost in many, many ways. There are many out there that have played the game a freakton (like me) who can give you an optimized build and BAM you have just instantly become amazing.

Play how you want, but once I can't improve in a game, once a character can't get stronger etc, alot of the fun is lost for me. Build your own if you can, get some advice, read a bit about how things work, but use your own creativity to make new and fun builds. Almost ANYTHING can work in PoE at least to finish the base game and do some mapping/delves etc. Each character you play up builds currency as well, and makes future characters stronger (especially in standard although I have pretty much never played standard myself).

Realistically if you build your own characters and started now, and played 8 hours a day for the rest of your life, you could still be making new and fun characters 10 years from now lol. I have not played THAT much, but I have made hundreds of fun characters over the last almost 13 years at this point, and there are tons I have not tried yet.

Anyway have fun, I envy you getting to play PoE from scratch. Also there are dinosaurs in later acts to kill.....I don't know if that matters to you, but......I still love killing the dinos lol.

Learning curb goes on forever but the game is fun, especially starting from scratch and discovering new mechanics and features as you go along. Nobody is going to consider you an "idiot".

You know if you want to farm clown rewards, maybe put in some effort.

Unlike you and your favorite game Diablo 4.

In that game you buy it, automatically get a powerful character without farming, and then win just by spending money :)

there's 10 act's in the campaign story mode thing. i'd say play up to act 5, while following a well made guide. no need to read through books of knowledge when you're just 'testing' to see if you like the game. you can even switch to another class as long as you dont go past act 5. if you like the game, then you got a lot of reading to learn about mechanics. there's also stash tabs to purchase like currency, maps and fragments.

POE 2 will come with 6 act's iirc.

when you hit act 5 it is also worth doing Lilly's quest (fully clear the beach "twilight strand") which unlocks her in your hideout (you can now buy any gem from her even with an alt from here on), also act 5 is where the fun begins why would you stop now, this is when you start to feel your character become more powerful.
