while the combat isnt as fluid as d3 the game offer a massive replayability because of the massive differents builds you can make.
and the developers have been very active with updates, that fixes stuff, balance changes, new items, and new skills,
you should really give it a try, it wont cost you anything :)
To clarify, I am talking about Diablo 2. Path of Exile built upon that making it a Diablo 2.5. Diablo 3 went a different direction (good or bad is irrelevant, plenty of other PoE vs. D3 threads floating about).
No class has clas specific linear unlocked spells. Spells in PoE are gems you can socket in items. Basically you can use any spell with any class. Whatever your preference. There are no special racial ablities for each class. There is however a very gigantic passive tree, shared by all the classes, difference being where they are placed on a tree. Any class can go any route and do anything you want. Some easier then others, depending on there location.
There is also no big emphasis on the story. Its focus is combat and character progression. It looks like Diablo because thats what inspired them the most. The makers are old D2 vet gamers. They loved Diablo 2. So obviously it was the biggest inspiration, and inspired lot of its theme.
There is also no gold, its one big bartering system. Every item is useful one way or another and is likely crucial to use.
So when people say its as close to as diablo as you get.. That would be very false. Torchlight, thats pretty much a diablo clone. PoE looks and feels like a diablo game because thats where a lot of the inspiration came from. But its quite a different game with many different mechanics.
If you cannot see the blatant copy of D2 systems, you have obviously never played D2.
1. Gold wasn't used, people used a bartering system.
2. Ladders and seasons stem from D2
3. Quests, character progression, difficulties, and experience curve all match D2 almost exactly.
4. Even minor things, like characters having unique one-liners when entering a new area, are very much reminiscent of Diablo 2.
If you were to ask "What other game in the entire industry is most like Diablo 2?" the answer is Path of Exile. No, torchlight doesn't fit the bill, missing way too elements.
Since you are obviously referring to me by using my own words, you will note that I said PoE changes some things around a bit with the passive tree and skill gems, but the overall experience is very much like Diablo 2.
However this one gives you a huge flexibility in character customization (with builds I mean).
And the atmosphere is much more darker and interesting than the typical "oh noes Diablo is coming back to kill us all"
That being said I think its good enough to hold its own :)
