I believe optional resets are already given out in other cases, I've received them on some chars.
As always, 1.3. put it that way:
If your routing breaks through changes in the tree, you'll get a forced reset, yes. Value changes only don't bring forced resets.
It's not every time an update comes out, it's for larger passive-tree-affecting patches, which usually is only every 3-4 months. Since the last such update a month has passed and we've had 8 additional patches (counting only those which affect the version-string), which did not reset the whole skill tree.
You have no excuse because you KNOW points will be reset - screenprint your existing tree or write down what you have chosen. Or even better, build your tree at poebuilder and save the link.
It is a good thing, because often you can try another entirely different build without creating a new character or using a hundred regret orbs.
The first time it happened to me, I was upset also, but now I look forward to tree resets.
Unfortunately, this is a common negative thing in most always online/mmo like games
Unless the tree has changed it is optional, over half my characters still had their passives in place, only the duelist, marauder and templar(and a ranger because i speced in to the duelists side) were forced to respec, and lo and behold, i gained more damage and survivability on all of them bar the ranger.
Unfortunetly people don't like change...the get lazy and complacent and don't like thinking which will get you killed in this game.
Those that get on with it are those that flourish.
Instead of having a well skilled character you need to delete because so much has changed you can now make it whatever you want, any type of character. its awesome.
Also, you cant change the skill three then keep old characters skilled.
Seriously i love the resets, Ill have a set of character that i can do whatever i want with, without having to start over.
Not that much about laziness or thinking(as you are building the same character again), as it is more a annoyance with the reset. But as said, that is the common problems with this type of games, and it is what it is, a small annoyance for some people.
