It still has 85Kish active unique players in the morning after 3-4 months.
Many PoE1 leagues struggle to keep 60K players after a week or two.
It's doing pretty good for no real content changes/additions other than some small map additions and endgame tweaks while still missing 2/3rds of its content lol.
Now if you mean "dying" as in losing player count over time. Yes it is just as any game does and of course if GGG never did anything else on the game yes the game would naturally die. This is EA though and there's a lot more content to come. :p
The way PoE1 works (and likely for PoE2 on a larger scale), is about 60K-100K players at league start for 2-3 weeks, then it drops off dramatically to like 5K-20K players for 3 months. Then restarts with a new league.
PoE2 you can probably bet based off PoE2 active numbers so far, the game will be pulling 300K to 500K players at league starts after full release and going down to 80K-120K for a few months until the next league start. That's not counting GGG's expectation of possibly doubling their player base with full release compared to EA (that said EA was really hyped up so not sure myself how many new players are out there).
That's if they don't mess up PoE2 content of course, and/or whether people get bored of iPoE2 easier than PoE1 long term. So far it seems to have more staying power than PoE1, for now.
As for Chris: He deserves whatever good that comes next for him. He's put in his time! :D
When Bex left there was a public announcement, I would assume the same will happen for Chris, they were both very public facing employees. Once/If that announcement happens more people will talk about it, until then, there's still like a dozen threads on the official forums about it.
