I enjoyed playing D2 in my youth, and I feel like PoE is the sequel to the franchise that Blizzard never delivered. PoE consistently grabs my attention, and the League content (whether it's good or bad) keeps me coming back regularly. I feel like there's always something new to learn.
I also like trading / haggling with other players, so PoE ticks the boxes that the majority of other ARPGs fail to provide for me - namely, persistent online gameplay, and the absence of P2W.
As for which game, I'm PoE all the way now. I'm finally at a point where I feel like I know what I'm doing, and I'm content. I don't like what I've seen of D4, especially the battle pass nonsense, and how it's more like the parts of D3 I disliked, than liked. I've been a huge Diablo fan since D1 came out, but I'm passing on D4 and anything Blizzard these days. Play what you want, as always.
Also, little remaining players? You are having a laugh right? It has an estimated 700k+ daily players, with 20k being on steam currently.
if you like complex games -> poe
it has better combat
more rewarding gameplay
not overly complex where as POE comes off as trying to add complexity for the sake of complexity.
for me personally, I gotta agree there is no king of the genre right now.
I recently went back to d3—which I have enjoyed in the past—and in multiple ways it feels old and dead.
PoE often feels obtuse and complex and bloated just for the sake of it rather than for any purpose. It also quickly stops being rewarding to play unless you're basically in a longterm relationship with it. It offers no middle-ground.
To me D4 is looking like a mix between lost ark and poe. I'm not touching it till reviews are out and the full monitization is revealed. If its trash, I'll keep game-hopping. if its good... well happy days
2. Diablo - The Hell 2
3. Path of Exile
couldn't get into Diablo2 despite many, many attempts since original release
Diablo 2:R / Diablo 3 are pretty easy games with almost no complexity but easy relaxed monster slaying
It completely depends what you prefer
After 1300h D3 and 650h D2 i cant imagine going back to either of them.
They are just too simple
