This page explains what loot filters are and how they work:
http://pathofexile.gamepedia.com/Item_filter
I would suggest to download some of the filters that are linked there, experiment with them, and choose the one you like most. You can also tweak them easily since all the information is kept in text files.
Personally I'm using Neversink's filter:
https://www.pathofexile.com/forum/view-thread/1246208
(This thread also explains in detail, and with examples, what his item filter does and how it looks.)
If you have further questions, do not hesitate to ask. :) Loot filters are an immensely powerful feature, but like many things that are powerful and highly customizable, it may take a bit of work to get it going.
It's the one I'm using too.
It scales as you level which is also nice, but make sire you're using the most up-to-date version of any filter.
Thanks guys
I don't understand what you mean - This is a tool GGG implemented and it's not some external thing added by the community. And it IS available in the game (it's right there in the UI menu).
GGG figured, correctly, that this would be the best way to use an item filter as it gives the users as much flexability as they need.
All you need is a very trivial script, no coding needed and definatly no "installing" (did you mean compiling?)
It's robust and flexible, what else would you need?
The Guide to Loot Filters[www.pathofexile.com]stickied in PoE Gameplay Help and Discussion Forum has everything you need to write your own or copy someone elses.
The loot filter system exists because the community requested it. GGG listened to the community and implemented that most powerful and flexible loot filter system in the history of aRPGs. They did exactly what the community requested (and some more). It boggles my mind that people are still finding something to complain about, when a dev goes way beyond the line of duty like in this case.
There is no "standard" filter because that was neither requested nor would it make sense. The loot filter system is a way for power users to customize the game so that they can play more efficiently - and since different users have different preferences, a pre-installed standard filter makes no sense.. The "easy" way is to simply not use one, the game is perfectly playable and enjoyable without a loot filter.
I've seen ZiggyD's video on "how to install a loot filter", and yes it does involve several different steps of copying and pasting code etc. Not that simple for people who would rather not get into the code of the game and mess with it. that's all.
No big deal. Relax.
All I'm saying is that it doesn't seem like it would be that difficult for the game makers to just provide a pretty simple system of filtering out the loot you don't want to see already in game.
It's not a complaint. I just don't understand why they didn't approach it that way. whatever.

simple enough???
What we're trying to tell you is that such a "simple system" was neither requested nor intended by the community or the devs, nor would it make sense, since every user would have his own preference with which rules exactly that "simple system" would operate.
Again: The community requested a powerful and flexible feature, and the devs implemented it in that way. Naturally, a system that is designed to provide maximum power and flexibility, will not have a no-brain mode for people it wasn't designed for. Then you come along and complain that the devs don't hand you the feature on a silver platter and cater exactly to your preferences. It comes across not only as a complaint, but also as a pretty lazy and ignorant one, sorry to say.
The reason why it's making me angry is that it's very rare for a developer to listen to their community in this way and provide powerful and flexible tools to power users. Very very often, the developers' stance on such features is: "It might be great for some people, but for regular users it will be too complicated, they will be confused by it and they don't want to be bothered to enable its power. Hence it's a waste of time and money to implement it." And here we have a dev who actually _listens_ to their community and implements such a feature anyway. And then you come along and show exactly the lazy approach that is the reason why we _don't_ get nice things like this for most games. It's just sad.
edit: albeit i would edit them all since they provided us with such a simple easy and effective tool to do so
