Lightning is what I prefer *aesthetically* and it has a nice (if short) stun and can amplify damage from follow-on attacks.
Fire - adds a DOT and not much else.
CI is worth it - *if* you go big on ES/ES recharge/change Life Leech/Regenerate to ES. You'll use ES as a HP replacement - instead of hitting Life nodes you'll be searching out ES nodes.

Your Fire Damage can Shock but not Ignite
Your Cold Damage can Ignite but not Freeze or Chill
Your Lightning Damage can Freeze but not Shock
Fire dot.... some items give life steal and nice dmg bonus for ignited enemies and proliferation will make your screen burn.
Lightning ball wrecks enemies early game but arc is pretty nice end game spell.

I play cold damage now with a lot of ES to go later to CI.
It is fun to play, i hope it is fun at the endgame later also.
Necromancer is not my thing, i like to kill everything myself, to have minions to do this for me is not really fun.
