Wanting to make a Monk-ish character.
Hi, I'm new here, and new to the game!

I don't meant Diablo 3's Monk (but not necessarily excluding it) but just martial artist monks in general.

Effectively I guess I'm saying I want to do a claw build. But I'm not sure what to do to accomplish it and I'm scared of frustrating myself trying to figure it out. I'm not looking to do a pure physical build, partially because that seems like a waste to do with a hybrid weapon where half the hybrid is magic.

I wouldn't mind dual-wielding claws, actually. What sort of gems should I go for, would Shadow be the best starting place on the passive skill tree, and what's a good basic play style?

Shadow would be your best bet for specializing in dual claw combat, yes. Focus on physical attack, attack speed and claw damage. The rest should be pretty straight forward.

This is perfect for what im running, a Dual wield claw crit spec, using Reave :D

Tree is here
http://www.pathofexile.com/passive-skill-tree/AAAAAgYAsNii2cgU9W9qjBa_sbMmle1BYeKmf1VLjDa1SPPqKgtwUonTcNVd8g5IEZYBCbjZ3UgHHpUu8NVJUW1sNj3ssIwLuXydqmyMYqy0xRX9ijhkr0X0b1d4GdYHj8GNgUscwuwFtY2_1CMwcd2oS3g6QlFH51Qk_f_eN9TtP-jWIupqlZoXkoAwfI19I_ZNkqOKTGAEsZVmA4fv49N-fXX-ugBeGY7tg_zFDY2HduOfSn1noBX2YnkABggum43BoGNDDdGlywzyveY-z896shkyAZsmhMWbtcM6dweHE5ykb57KSl-w7g4=

6l setup will be Reave, Multistrike, Faster Attacks, Crit multi, Blood Magic and Ice bite

For levelling until 6l, use Blood dance unique boots

Use assassins mark to proc power charges, and Vaal reave for 8 stacks of reave

Ice golem for added crit and accuracy

Use the unique gem Pugilist in the jewel socket above blood drinker for 33% claw damage <3 so good

Bandits are Oak, Kraityn, and Alira

Rats nest and Maligaro's are also recommended... no other uniques.

HAVE FUN add me if you have questions.

"The build you are trying to load is using an old version of the passive tree and will not work."

That being said, thanks for all of the advice! I'll definitely try to work with what I've got - after all it's fairly easy enough to get two whole reset points early on.

I've gotten to Act 2 with my "Monk" and it's going great so far! However, I'm wondering if anyone has a build that's actually "up to date"... or at least up to date enough for the website to recognize it.

Sorry for bumping, but I'm really getting frustrated by how all the builds I'm finding that's related to my query are too out of date for the website - and it's not the people I'm angry at, it's the site for not having any "backwards compatibility" with builds.

There isnt actual martial arts is there?

Depends on how you define martial arts.

The martial arts themselves aren't important, though. It's the philosophy of using one's body as a weapon, with the claws serving as an extension/addition to that weapon.

Or I could be less pretentious and get right to it: I want to punch eldritch horrors in the face and kill them.

No it doesnt really because the majority usually mean martial arts in real life, as the art itself.

Which martial arts are we talking about, then? Eastern Asian ones? Western European ones? American ones?

Does it matter? Most martial arts are much like eastern martial arts, they all have similarities as the art itself not the weapons of some lame claw animation in a video game dude.

Didn't I say early on that it didn't actually matter and I just wanted to punch things in the face?

Regardless...
A lot of martial arts actually incorporates weapons. In that sense, there's actually martial art-ish flavor text for staves in the Templar side of the passive tree. There's martial arts that incorporates claws.

What I'm saying, though, is that "martial art" can refer to any disciplined fighting style. I was attempting to joke around about semantics in the first place, but this turned into a serious argument for some reason.

It can but my point is it usually does not and does not mean that to most people your only nitpicking trying to look smarter about it, and focusing on pointless things.

Dude, chill out. I haven't been half as aggro to you as you have been to me, so get off your high horse and recognize when I'm backing off.

Claw builds aren't all that popular since the update as life leech was nerfed. You could try and do a Facebreaker build, which is always popular. Facebreakers is a pair of gloves that enormously increases damage while unarmed, so I guess that kinda falls under "martial arts"

Never done the build, but I know it's a lot more viable than most claw builds post-update.
Josh Oct 11, 2015 @ 10:50pm
Actually ^ This is false, im running the build that i linked beforehand (and please, mind the spelling mistakes, i literally just woke up) And leech is fine, you need to use Bloodseeker claw for insta-leech, and its gives you 2.6% leech, aswell as the implicit mod on the second wielded claw, you can always stack leech for more effectiveness, the claw "bloodseeker" is a better alternative than vaal pact because you can regenerate life also, and with the boots "Blood dance" it helps 10x because of the frenzy charge bonuses that you get with it.
