The stated intent is to have PoE and PoE 2 seasons leapfrog each other. Even if it isn't so in the long term, there's no way they'll stop doing PoE seasons until enough of the playerbase migrates to PoE 2 (and stays there).
Also you really don't need a build worth a mirror to beat hard content.
The entire game is geared toward the post act 10 people and things less than 10% of the players will ever reach. I have played multiple characters over the years and I have never completed act 10, up to now, this is the first time I made it to act 9. Act 9, and I get one shot killed many times. Normally I never made it past Act 6. The shear fact to the number of people that complete certain achievements showing under 10% of all players, means most players quit long before endgame.
Skill issue.
Second other than having to be online, you can totally play PoE (and PoE 2) solo. That is how I have played 99.9% of the time. The option to trade for stuff though makes it a much more fun experience (at least for me).
As far as PoE 1, they say they will still support it and have new leagues, but......I highly doubt there is going to be much of an audience for it going forward. Most of the people who want to play PoE have played it to death and still play it mainly because they have no equivalent option that is as good, or better. PoE 2 is going to add a ton, has more long term potential for each character, and most importantly has not been played for over a decade by long term fans etc.
There may be some people who still play poe 1...especially until poe 2 is fully launched and free for everyone, but eventually I think it will mostly be a ghost town/game. They MIGHT make it offline at some point if that happens, since they have been so cool about making things free and not pay to win etc over the years. I would not hold my breathe though.
As far as PoE 2, you can wait and play it once it's free, but it'll probably be at least 6 months and perhaps a year before that happens. Personally I know for a fact it will be more fun to me than D4 and many other games I paid over $60 for, so blowing 30$ to get to play it right away is worth it to me.
As far as difficulty, there are builds you can play in PoE 1 that are VERY easy/safe to play...and I am very sure there will be similar builds in PoE 2 (more so in some ways since there are so many ways to boost power long term).
For now if you want to really enjoy PoE 1, I suggest A: Using a build someone else has made that is highly defensive and B: Not playing in league as you can trade for anything in standard and get insanely powerful because of that.
Consider a life regen/summoning build for instance, maybe with golems as well. Really high max life, tons of life regen (you get some from summon nodes as well), maybe even toss in some decent block/spell block (Think there is a node that shares your shield bonuses with your summons), go all out defensive, while bolstering your summons and summon damage as much as possible. Toss in some golems for additional damage, and concentrate on dodging/healing yourself and you shouldn't have a hard time getting through the game or even doing end game content. Important uniques like the one that gives zombies tons of life (makes them bigger zombies, some head piece, been a decade since I used it) are easy to get in standard, so you can easily end up with a freakton of max life for you, your zombies, Tons of life regen (so lab traps etc don't bother you), and quite decent damage.
Anyway PoE 1 is still a great game. Now is the time to really play it if you have not before, even going forward after friday...if you have not played PoE 1 into endgame, do that first. No rush on PoE 2, it's not going anywhere and you can join EA later. Enjoy PoE 1 before PoE 2 ruins it for you lol. It's a GREAT game and very worth playing through at least with a few characters.
I'm afraid most people who get into PoE 2 are not going to be able to easily go back and enjoy PoE 1 anymore. I may be wrong, but I doubt it.
I mean I had over 3k hours before I got many of those achievements. I bet a lot of the 90% remaining players haven't quit, they just haven't reached critical mass of game knowledge yet.
What's your playtime?
