Just do the in-game Tutorial stuff, learn to equip items and skills, learn about linking support gems. Kill monsters and have fun :)
You can go to the Vendor in town and buy other skill gems to try out as well, you are not stuck with the quest reward gems.

If there's something you don't understand, you can ask question on the forums or chat, or look it up online. But, don't worry about it too much. You might end up reading about some stuff that mostly appears in the late game and is very rare in the actual Campaign.
Don't worry about making mistakes. You can change everything about your character except the starting class, you can equip any weapon type at any time and change skill gems at will (as long as you meet the stat and level requirements).
Re-speccing Passive Points can be done, but do note that it is a bit costly if you have to do it a lot. While leveling, you shouldn't really do it. Just leave the "wrong" points in and continue leveling, worry about them later (unless you picked something like "Cannot deal non-fire damage" and you actually do want to use other damage types).
Read some guide before you jump in, if you don't have 500+ hours to spare on this frustrating puzzle game.
Don't give a shet about "trial and errors", it won't work in POE, your 10 years knowledge of POE will be gone with a few snaps of the dev's fingers anyway, since they can change any rules as they please.
People have played the game without guides before, including me. The game isn't as complicated as people claim, there's just a lot of things that combine to create complexity.
While you guys are trying to waste hundred hours of his life time by telling him to go in blind, let he stuck at level 20 boss and unable to get to more content.
Better ask yourself who is the real troll here?
Show us the play through of you struggling with a level 1 character using a random skill gem, and we can talk :)
In the end, most players with the right mind will pick my option "save 100+ of hours by following guides", not your "waste 100+ hours repeating same things over and over while getting no reward".
Unless they are a masochist ofc.
10 minutes worth reading imho...

Once you have an easy to use build guild set up, then its a matter of dodging confusing past league content you dont understand, and not keeping their unique drops. Pick like two you think look interesting and look them up on youtube so you can get value out the content. Just skip the rest youll be fine.
Other than that dont expect to do it all hit max level and clear everything. Have fun with the build.
You may find an item that makes you want to try a new build, this is good.
Two things will overwhelm, the build, which a guild and POE builder will make easier to understand, and all the past seasonal content which imo is all optional and can overwhelm and fill your stash with trash youll never utilize.
