Item Pickup Key

The "item pickup key" F doesn't pick up items, it just requires me to hold F and click on the item anyway. Why is it like this?

It's not a button to pick up the nearest item, if that's what you're expecting.

It's a means of avoiding picking up items by clicking on them in the middle of combat (instead of, say, moving or attacking in a way that you'd die without). With the relevant option enabled, you can't pick up items unless you're holding the key, in which case you pick up items by clicking on them just as if you had the option disabled.
