You don't need to buy any.
Pay for convenience, not pay to win.
You will run out of stash space before tier 5 end game maps.
so ifyou wana play and not needing to have multi charakters carry your items, you will need to buy space.
also sale now so its worth it
The only gameplay relevant stuff you can buy are stash tabs, which are a huge help in organizing your inventory and it also makes it much easier for you to sell your items to other players. But even without them you can do everything, you will just spend more time taking care of your inventory, so it's just pay2convenience, or to save time. And well, to get more storage space as well.
Also, be aware of that PoE is a pretty hard game. Completing the campaign is relatively easy, but actually getting to the end of the endgame is really difficult for a new player.
So basically requires a one time purchase to be at even playing field, kind of like buying any game, except this one you can play as long as you want before deciding if you want to "buy it".
I think you should treat this games f2p option as a huge demo. You can definitely complete the campaign without buying anything but once you get to maps or play quite a bit more then having those stash tabs become pretty essential. I would also HIGHLY RECOMMEND buying a supporter pack of any kind instead of just points, because you'll get the same amount of points compared to just buying the points.
Sounds like you didn't get far, because this game is fast as F. I also tried this game few times in the past but it never stuck with me, until recently.
Lets just leave this Ziz video here too, prob explains what to get way better than me lmao:

Its much, much faster than D3.
POE is not P2W. All MTX are cosmetic and stash related only to my knowledge. No way to get extra power for your char that others don't have. Extra stash is definitely a quality of life improvement through but it's more pay for convenience. You can play the game without extra stash, just have more issues with storing and sorting stuff and you may need to use mules to store extra stuff (you get a lot of char slots for an account). Without a premium tab you can list stuff for sale on the POE trade site automatically but you can still do trades in the game.
Haven't played D3, it's faster than POE? POE feels pretty fast to me, you kill stuff quickly or they kill you quickly lol.
Buy First Blood pack. This will get you a bonus stash tab + weapon effect + store currency. Then spend the 200 store currency (only when there's a stash sale on) on a currency tab, map tab and upgrade on existing stash tab to premium tab. You should have just enough currency to do this.
Stashes are shared account wise.
Endgame you will likely need tabs, bare minimum about 20$-25$ map and currency on sale. But you will likely want more than the 4 tabs if you keep playing
PoE pace can be faster than D3 or slower according to your playstyle and build.
Stash tabs might be seen as the only thing you might need from the cash shop. they are cheap and go on sale like once a month.
Everything else is cosmetic.
They have a lot of consumer friendly mechanics to spending, like you can buy a $30 pack and then later spend $30 again to upgrade it to the $60 pack, ect. Most of the packs give you a LOT of currency to spend on the cash shop, on top of having a lot of cosmetics.
None of the stash tabs, cosmetics, pets, skins, hoodies, t-shirts, soundtracks, signed art by the devs, give any advantage in game outside of being a trade tycoon, in which lots of stash tabs will help.
I consider the base game to be the 'free trial', where you get to have a good feel for the mechanics to see if the game is right for you. Then, if you've decided that the game is worth a purchase, you buy a Currency and a Map tab for like $20 and enjoy the game.
There are other tabs that are generally useful, usually pairing with some sort of previous generation currency that got pushed to the main game (essences and such), but they aren't going to be nearly as critical as a Currency and a Map tab.
As far as additional or premium tabs, that depends on how much you hoard. If you hold onto pieces because they give you ideas for other builds you might want some extra tabs around. If you want to get into the trading scene, having a Premium tab is... *technically* not required, but I would highly suggest in the strongest terms having at least one Premium tab for trading.
Everything else is purely cosmetic.
tl;dr: Pay to *win*? Technically, no. But if you expect to be pursuing the end game content, at least some purchases will be all but required if you expect to make any progress within a Season.
