magic vs rare items?

While I level a new character with no leveling gear. Is it worth picking up magic items that might replace rare items or is rare just plain better than magic items no matter the /itemlevel ?

A well rolled magic can be better than a rare if it has the affix's, sockets and links that you need.
No shame in wearing/using blues while leveling.

yup, if it's a potential upgrade BUT you are usualy better just crafting something

Can be.
A +1 to fire/cold/lightning skill on a quartz scepter can take some casters a long way. Melee users can gain +Phys damage to their weapons and keep their damage current while they level.

I would check trade before crafting your own though.

certain recipes can be. like the mentioned +1 skill recipes.

what i would absolutely not suggest is using jewelers/fuses/chromes to make your own 4+ link items when leveling up since you will almost always be able to buy comparable things with the sockets you need for cheaper from poe.trade when you factor in the cost of all the orbs.

also when leveling links/colors are often more important than stats on armor.

You want to avoid crafting like the plague till end game. Chances are you could have just bought something from another player for like 1 chaos instead of blowing jewlers, fuses, alts /chaos or whatever. Comeplete waste of currency.

Yup, cuz we all start off with chaos orbs falling out of our..
Using the vendor recipe to make movespeed boots and/or a +1 wand/scepter = cost effective and smart use of crafting system when you have no currency to go shopping in a new league.
