Here is the key to amassing wealth:
Don't pick up most of the crap. When I first started, I picked up almost everything. Then I picked up rares and above. Now I only pick up rares with good bases, rares I need for the chaos recipe (tho even this is questionable), and currency. Even though leaving all that stuff feels like you'd be poor, the exact opposite happens because you can spend your time running more maps. All of that time spent picking up, going back to town, IDing everything, and selling for a pittance is time you are not spending on another map. If you played 2K hours and that's all you have, then you are probably picking up too much crap and hauling it back to town.
The streamers take this to greater extremes--they wipe the map first, then walk around and only pick up valuable stuff. The goal is for each map to take like 2 mins or less. Think about how long it takes you to clear one, now think about how many they clear in an hour versus how many you clear and you start to see why they make so much more. In this league, they don't even clear the map sometimes, just run to monolith, clear that, then move to the next map.
Additionally, trade. Learn the value of items worth something and trade with people. I actually make more trading than I do finding drops.
Most lvl 21 or 23% quality gems also fetch decent prices up to several ex. If you got both (via temple), for certain gems that's several ex. https://poe.ninja/challenge/skill-gems
Selling decent rares is also worth it. Can be combined with running red maps.
Farming bosses is also a good idea: Uber Aztiri can drop stuff that gets you at least an ex. likewise Uber Elder.
Delving is also worth it. Deep down you can find rare fossils which are worth a lot.
Another idea would be going for syndicate: Upgraded breachstones are still worth a lot, scarabs fetch good prices, setting up cimeria and eleron for uniques can also be profitable (got a HH once that way).
High lvl temple can also give you very good stuff. No matter the temple lvl, double corrupted items/gems can fetch incredible prices.
You could also make yourself a magic finder and just run maps fast.
Plenty of options in the game.
Let's look at the temples sacrifice table... how much would you value the use of it?
Let's look at what you can build with it...
Tempered Flesh (40c) + Vial of Transcendence (133.57c) -> Transcendent Flesh (580.16c)
Now, this is the direct upgrade with the most profit (406.59c), so you shouldn't really sell if for much less, and that upgrade path yields you about 2ex (I've rounded liberally to accommodate for the fact that you might not really be able to buy/sell at those prices). Yes, on the other hand you might get a headhunter out of it, but that's a risky move, or at least more risky (you might not sell the Transcendent Flesh).
This leads to the interesting idea about whether you should just waste that thing... and many people will... sure, you could offer that thing up in a trade channel or something, but if you do that, do it efficiently. if you need to advertise it actively for 30 minutes before you manage to sell it, you could have done better using it yourself for direct profit, because those 30 minutes of gametime probably cost you quite a few chaos orbs.
So you could profit like 2 ex from that room others might overlook and discard. And the good thing? That upgrade path described above doesn't care about the level of the temple, so even if you farm low tier maps for something, you can get that room and use it to its fullest potential.

Did you do a breachstone and got a blessing?
Look at how prices are crazy:
The Halcyon (332.09c) + Blessing of Tul (2c) -> The Pandemonius (385.15c)
The blessing is 2c, yet if you use it on an item, you can make 50c, just gotta have the capital to start it of and do it in moderation so you can sell them (it doesn't help you if you have 10 of those Pandemoniuses stashed). Now of course there's a risk to it, but if you factor such things in you might still value it at 25c instead of the 2c face value.
This isn't just for blessings:
Profit: 8,58c for: The Bowstring's Music (2c): Death's Harp (0.42c) -> Death's Opus (11c)
That's 8c for a specific kill and some trading, not great, but if all other things fail, it's something.
8* The Wolven King's Bite 1440,4 c -> Rigwald's Quills 1582,56 c (Profit: 142.16c)
You quite literally profit from doing trading for others that are too lazy to purchase the divination cards themselves (as it can be time consuming). 140c is a good part of an ex...
There's tons of these oddities. And then there's more hidden stuff like bestiary.
Unique Belt: Farric Ape (45c)
Now for bestiary you need to pay a chaos to convert the beast you caught, but still... would you get 44c for a random unique belt if you do it yourself? Probably not in the short term (for enough tries you might get that value out of it for the reason it's so pricey: Headhunter) How many new players might just have that create a unique belt sitting in their to-do-list without knowing it or thinking they should just do all of those recipes? 40ish c or quarter of an ex wasted by not knowing what stuff has value (at least in the majority of cases).
Um, is your math very poor estimating? This league is the first league I've even bothered to play as far as mapping and in just this league alone I've spent 8 ex and still have a couple in the bank. So if you've played 2k hours and only earned/spent 5 ex I'd say that's something about you. I've played this game for a little over 600 hours (total, not this league) but in the terms of how far I've actually progressed as I said, not too much. When I first started playing this game I mostly just made a lot of characters and leveled up a lot I never even bothered trying to do end game stuff. This is the first league I've kind of started doing it, I've never killed atziri, never done uber elder, etc. Though this league I likely will if I don't get bored first and move on. Point being while I'm not super rich by any stretch, the amounts you're saying seem a bit exaggerated on the low end.
RMT is a superb way of getting banned though - do not recommend.
I'm gonna keep this page in my favourite, because you guys gave me a lot of tips i didnt even knew about.
Thanks!
