The Standard and Hardcore leagues / ladders are permanent. New 3-4 month leagues (currently Rampage and Beyond) are launched a few times a year, with fresh ladders and economies. There are also frequent shorter events (such as 1-2 hour races), with their own standings. While the ladders are ranked by experience, many of the shorter events are collected into seasons, during which you gain points based on your performance in the individual races.

For most races, when the race ends your char and his items and stash transfer to the permanent leagues.

This also happens at the end of the 3-4 month leagues.
