Help: trapper, deerstalker boots, how do they work?

hey guys, trying to figure out what "gems in this item are supported by trap" means, but i cant find a clear answer on google. any help plz?

For all intends and purposes, a http://pathofexile.gamepedia.com/Trap_(support_gem) is calculated as combined with skills in there. You effectively have an extra (linked) slot if you wanted to use that support gem so to say.

Any gems in the item are effectively "linked" with Trap.

here is good link to Trap gem http://pathofexile.gamepedia.com/Trap_%28support_gem%29. i get that part, but how does it make the boots like a 5-link item? how do i use this to full effect?

Lets say you a have a 4 link of those boots, and insert:
- fireball
- fire penetration
- chance to ignite
- elemental proliferation

But the boots support that fireball by the trap support gem, so it becomes a fireball-trap instead of a self-cast (the other support gems are still considered). Without you needing to apply your own gem for the trap.

I don't know if the masters can bypass the itemlevel-restrictions on slot numbers. So let's say they might be max 3 linked slots in your case. (+1 virtual for the trap)
