avarius can be brutal.. especially in HC, as his second attack phase has a "one shot" attack mechanic (balls of wtf just happened aoe throw your keyboard at the monitor) along with its other attacks. avarius is not difficult really, but not knowing the fight, will more than likely get you killed (unless lucky to miss the balls of doom), especially if you are a melee class that needs to get in close.
phase one of his fight can be easily dodged by keeping an eye out for his wind ups. the gardians he uses cannot be killed so try not to focus them.. but they do help you stay alive being used as a way to block avarius attacks. movement is key. and you can also use your totems as a way to "block" some attacks by standing behind them.
the best way to understand the fight is to watch some vids on it.

as always, make sure you resists are capped, you have flasks full, especially a quick silver flask to run around the beam attack.
it can be frustrating in HC not practicing the fight. as act five is the mid point of progress. and dieing in this fight makes those 5 acts a pain. BUT. if you survive that fight , you have act 10 to be excited over.
over leveling the fight can be a little helpful as well.
best of luck.
i play HC exclusive. and this fight easily made me rage quit a couple times. lol. hate one shot mechanics. but it becomes easier over time.
cheers.
my appologies for not reading correctly your OP. max resists, 2.5k health (min), run speed, knowing the fight, overleveling, frost wall (though i have not tried this myself) using totems to block, like you would the statues, ruby flask, have a portal open and jump through it when he says "i am your god" (his trigger for the balls of doom). sure they may be a couple more i'm missing.
good luck!
