Level 30 player would receive 86.7% of the XP
More level difference between the players would make the ratio worse

There are certain leveling-spots, that he can use to level up fast, incase he falls too far behind.
But tbh I´d advise you to start a new build with him and just help him out with some currency and/or equipment. It will be more worthwhile for the both of you. Oh yeah and I am almost sure you know that already but don´t try to clear the maps - just go for the quests.
