There's no one default global channel. Load balancing etc. You wouldn't want tens of thousands of users in there. The game has a dynamic amount of chat channels, in which it'll put players into, that haven't specified a global channel to join.
As global channels are tied to the league (but shared across SSF and non-SSF), some might only have one populated channel in the low numbers (e.g. Hardcore league), while others may have 20 or more. Just pick a number between 2 and 20, and look for a few minutes, if the amount of chatter in there seems healthy enough or the people more helpful than usual, but possibly a bit less chatty, stay there, otherwise, go down a channel.
And of course never visit /global 1 unless you want to see the world burn.
