What you are finding are monsters or strongboxes that say 'drops mirrored items' which will have an identified item drop, and then add at least 1 mirror of that item which 99.9999999999999% of the time will be worthless
Now if you can get the currency that lets you mirror an item, that's worth something since you could duplicate a perfectly rolled best possible item and then sell it.
Mirrored trash-tier items come from mainly two sources: Strongboxes with the mod for it and a prophecy that drops an item and 3 mirrored copies. The later one of those can also be used to get an alchemy orb. This can save you from using some more time-consuming recipes when there's a challenge for those items to come from selling to vendor. (alternative the chaos recipe with one or more items below ilvl 60 yields a chance as well; alchemy orbs would be selling enough stuff that grants shards)
So yeah, once or twice a year they're useful.
