i get massive fps drop when im in town when there is alot of monsters or during a heavy load

ps:its not my internet i double checked that

This is an old, old, oooold problem that a million people have reported and GGG still hasn't solved after all these years.

Unfortunately there is no solution that works for everyone, but you could start by trying the advice in GGG's official troubleshooting guide:

no issues for me, but then again I have 2 2080s....seriously though make sure your connection settings are lockstep. had this issue too years ago.

You have a network mode in your options, and if it’s set to lock-step and you’re dropping packets it can look like lag in areas where there are lots of people.

At the main screen you can change your network mode.

Had the same issue, Switch your Renderer to a modern one like Vulkan, Fixed all my issues, Lots of games have this option now, i highly recommend people start adapting it

What Hans said ^^ also i'll add to that:
rtx 3080 and 5600x i also had this issue running directx renderer, swapped over to Vulkan and it is night and day, was also a fix for when I ran an i7 4770k and gtx 1080 :)
graphics options can be tweaked to your liking but whatever you do, DO NOT enable shadows + global illumination, this 1 setting will kill your pc. especially if you have shadows on high or even ultra.

Have you tried a different server location.

I usually ``toggle performance metrics`` with f1 to see what is going on in the background while i`m playing.

It`s very handy and i recommend using it if you`re facing performance issues.

For example if Amsterdam has a lot of spikes i do the old switcheroo to Frankfurt or

London etcetera.

you shouldn't have to disable to sound to fix this, set to vulkan renderer, you can even edit the config file and edit the line in [DISPLAY] "max_VS_shader_model=" with "max_VS_shader_model=vs_vkn" fixed

yeah it IS still high end believe it or not. 7700k i7 is no slouch and a 2080 is akin to a 3070, its simply an RTX generation older buuuuuuuut since this game doesnt utilize this it is moot.

bottom line if the game were optimized proper, a system like this can handle what this game throws at it graphically. its the threads and server sync when dealing with spawning assloads of monsters and their varied attacks all at the same time. game engine just doesnt handle it well. i have a near identical system (though mine is better, ti and 64GB of ram etc.) and run into the same problems.

though i havnt tried the vulkan fix being suggested so i might next time im on. but i seriously doubt it'll fix going into the Scourge mode and getting insta ganked by 150 things that leap in from just off screen. all within a quarter of a second lag spike on my end of the game.

At this point it seems like 3080 is the recommended gpu for running high dens maps, bossing and league content. Theres a another option though, even though its terrible, dynamic resolution and thats what i use copium.
