With enough common sense you can make a character that works out enough for you to learn the game and later on if you want to push more content lookout some guides as reference.
Or you can just forget anything about learning and discovering by following a step-by-step guide
IF if you want to see the game, and play some maps and get a feeling for the game, just play.
you can wing it NP.. but if you want learn the game I suggest you read a guide and play at the same time.
This league i played ~1h / day (~110h total) reached easy Mid-Endgame and its nice Map-Play, at bosses i have to learn a bit but if you get tatics, its good, good mix for real hard and easier once too. I have done also more character optimizing this league, had done easily re-skill 39 ponits to try out other passives. Does not require single grinding one place/bosses. I do different stuff each time.
You can wing it, but you'll have to remember to be heavily focused on defences. Staying alive is typcially most important.
But of course it is interesting to be experienced at it and you are. Just take a good look at the passive skill tree and plan it ahead and you will be fine.
Then, if you want to be that endgame try harder, wait for the next league, next month, and follow a guide.
Sure, you can wing it, but only if you want to waste a bunch of hours just to glean a basic understanding of an overly complicated game.
I suggest you bookmark every guide created in the last 3-4 months. Memorize it all. Your class doesn't matter all that much since they all use the same tree, but just start in different places and then get different "buffs" once you complete labrynths.
Memorize everything. You'll still have questions. Even the in game help is generally useless except to tell you the basics, and it will take you 70 hours just to unlock most of it. Have in mind what you want to do, then ask the community the best class/skills for the specific purpose. Take the best suggestion and then join the grind of a thousand hours as you delve into everything RNG.
The ten acts you play through isn't even the core game. Think of what SHOULD be the core game as a tutorial. The longest tutorial ever created for anything short of training for NASA. Once you have completed the tutorial once or twice, you may know enough to build a somewhat competent character that can do more than farm tier 5 maps whilst stuck at level 80 due to dying repeatedly and losing massive chunks of xp.
There is no respec unless the developers determine they have made too many changes, then you have to respec then and there. If you choose to apply a point, you lose the respec. There are items in game that are rare as hell loot drops you can use to remove skill points, and you get 12 or so respec points from side quests and such while in the tutorial, but don't expect to be able to do some full respec of points until your 3rd or 4th playthrough OR you have roughly 1,000 hours in game and you are playing a perfectly built character and you are lucky with RNG, since RNG is how drops are determined, stats are determined, "crafting" is done, sockets, links, etc. Everything is RNG. Welcome to the best and worst game ever made.
