PoE 2 is not its separate brand new game.
There will be a choice to start "old" char types with "old" campaign and "new" char types with "new" campaign, with one combined endgame.
Any MTX (stash tabs, cosmetics, etc) will be carried over
PoE2 stuff is new classes story but combines with PoE1 at end game.
So PoE1 will get the engine updates and other changes (like the new gem skill system as I cant see how the two can combine if PoE1 dont switch to the new system as PoE2 chars with PoE1 type gear slots will be stupidly overpowered).

- overhaul of many PoE core systems
- 19 ascendancy classes to choose from (distinct from those of PoE campaign)
...note: Skills granted by ascendancy class will now scale with character level
- Devs: "progression of armour and weapons has been redone from start to finish"
- Sockets will be reworked (and always be linked - no Orb of Fusing anymore
- Primary socket colour still based on primary attribute (-> new currency item fixes that
- Support gems can be socketed into active skill gems
- the new "meta-skill gems" will be great for toggle auras + reduced mana cost
What both share is the Endgame /Atlas system. Also, the Abyss sockets will remain unaffected an I hope "passive Skilltree" won´t be changed too much..
This sounds like 50% new game imho.. or the biggest PoE-Expansion ever
Pretty sure the new passive tree is for the POE 2 classes.
Pretty sure the passive tree will stay the same, they talked about new ascendencies not classes.
I think the new socketing system will be ported over to PoE and will be the global new system to socket gems tho.
But for Passive Tree.. they plan to make adjustments.. but maybe it comes unrelated via Patch. Just hope they are careful with passive tree and FLASKS
