and about hardcore, the way you do it is by completely avoiding everything that can kill your build. for example, i was playing a juggernaut with sunder and the gear i had meant that i couldnt go to any place with high spikes of damage, but i could completely ignore things that dealt constant damage. they would never get past my armor, resistances, or life regen. if i had kept going and gotten brass dome from minotaur, i could have expanded the safe area even further past almost any source of physical damage. there are lots of items like that for different builds that will allow you to go to places you couldnt before, eye of chayula is a really common one for caster builds because it has cant be stunned. once you have cant be stunned you can pretty much ignore white mobs

When I played ED/Contagion, I died 50-something times during the campaign. So yeah, it's possible :(

Gear does help - more life and more resists are needed. Make sure you have 75% elemental resists, and prioritize life after that.

If you're still dying because your cast speed is too slow and enemies are rushing you and hitting you with projectiles that are still causing 1-shots, then you need to use different, more effective and faster skills.

I don't know too many skills yet - still learning - but Arc is super new player-friendly. It's casts very fast, has an instant effect after the cast animation, has crowd control built in, and does a lot of damage while leveling. There's some other skills that are like this - others can assist.

But as they say... a good defense is a good offense. If you kill the enemies instantly before they even do anything to you, you basically can't get 1-shot no matter how bad your gear is :)

what do your resist look like? If your getting one shot you need to avoid the hit or soak it up and resist can help lower the amount you need to soak.

You need to pump defenses/health early on or you quickly reach a point where stuff will one-shot you. Make sure you have a lot of +% health nodes on your passive tree (like all the ones near your starting area), and +health on all your gear. Even with that you usually don't want to facetank bosses, if they have an obvious wind-up attack you want to move out of the way.

Yeah, defenses are the key. Sadly, PoE is badly designed on some parts and put such a gigantic heavy focus on defense that resistence is not an option, but a must need. Never think "40% are good enough". 75% is the lowest amount you should have and everything more is helpful because mobs tend to penetrate. Not to mention life/armor/evasion etc. Pure damage-builds with "some" defense stuff is only an option if you know the game in and out and can prepare for everything thanks to your knowledge. But thats mostly a tall order, given the fact there are many unfair attacks in the game - and paying too much attention can put you in a state of "hitting a wall", because you will do content so slowly that you wont get gear-upgrades in like..forever.

You should mentally prepare for that. If that is not your cup of tea, you should consider playing something different sadly. I myself strungled with that and do play some other arpgs from time to time just to take a break from the "hardcore" design of poe.

Wrong.

Get your resists up to a respectable level and get some HP. And by respectable level I mean 50+.

Also don't listen to people who say this is badly designed, literally no idea what they are talking about. They are just upset they need to put thought in to their character.

If you're dying a lot and not having fun, compensate with some gear for now. Get some armor or rings with HP and resists. Rings are the cheapest way to fill those gaps. Path into some life nodes with your next few levels.

You can grind some levels on a map that's near your current level and that you can still run easily if you're really stuck.

wrong? if you only skill on damage and get no life skills or atleast something else to tank yourself up a little you will die XD and ofcurse resists are important but not in act 4 XD
