Waypoints are at every couple maps, town portals are so available they should just make them an innate skill. So you can always open a door back to town at will.
And there's nothing to be gained by locking instances open indefinitely - in fact there's a lot to be lost by allowing that, not the least people taking up server resources because they leave their game logged in while they're in bed. So no matter what, the instances will have to be set to expire.
And you get at least 8 minutes out of the instance. If you're in between waypoints you should just be dropping off loot. Once you reach a waypoint - then go back to town to spend the next 20 minutes studying build guides.
